When I drive around in my car, whenever it manages to handle well or I drive it well and it responds accordingly, I give the dash a little pat and say “Good car.”

Decent heel toe? Sticks through a tight corner? Makes a good noise on downshift? Give it a little pat and let it know you’re working well together.

I talk to my truck lots. Hello/goodbye, that I wish I could care for it better. Stuff like that.

If you don’t give the dash a “good car” pat you’re a sick fuck.

During spirited driving I do a lot of this...

I sometimes pat mine on the rear as I walk away to let it know I appreciate it.

So dirty. How often does it slap you for that?

I do the same! It may be a crappy Korean ecobox, but if I’ve had a bad day and it gets me safely home, or if I am about to head home after a bad day, or I get a little ‘spirited’ (as much as can be done with a Hyundai Accent) and all goes well, I’ll often give it a pat on the hood or dash and say ‘Thanks girl.’ (I stick with the old adage that all my rides are females for some reason!)

I also gave mine a name, which a lot of people don’t do these days....considering it’s a basic model with no options, she’s affectionately called ‘Humdrum’. :)

Despite how silly it can sound to the layman, I have a theory that people who treat their machines nicely are also nicer to other people, too.

I give my car a love pat when one or many of it’s safety systems work together to save me from some impending doom.

I think the most recent involved a panic stop on the highway where all escape routes were blocked with cars or debris and the ABS and stability management brought me to a safe and sudden stop with a narrow margin for success.

Good car. Good good car.
